About This Event

The WHA Annual Meeting and Conference will take place at George Mason University Korea, located in Incheon, South Korea. This event represents the 35th gathering of the World History Association (WHA), focusing on the theme of 'Closed Borders and Global Connections: Being Global after Globalization.' This theme highlights the ongoing changes in the world and the necessity for the discipline of World History to adapt to these developments. It acknowledges the historical context provided by Jerry Bentley, one of the founders of the WHA, who noted the increasing intensity of cross-cultural interactions throughout history while also recognizing the challenges that have emerged in recent times. With the rise of nationalism, protectionist measures, and regional conflicts, the WHA invites scholars to reconsider how world history is taught and studied in a landscape where globalization is no longer perceived as a given. The Program Committee encourages proposals that delve into topics that explore this new dynamic, such as historical precedents like empires, invasions, epidemics, diasporas, and trade routes that offer insights into a world marked by interconnection yet not necessarily aligned with modern globalization. Specific areas of interest include the history of Asian trade and exchange, transimperial and migration histories, religious and cultural exchanges, ecological frameworks, and communication infrastructures. The WHA is particularly keen on submissions that center on Asian experiences and perspectives related to global connectivity, as well as lessons and models from Korea concerning democracy, energy, and climate change. Submissions are welcomed from scholars across all career stages and regions, emphasizing the WHA's commitment to inclusive and accessible scholarly exchange. The committee recognizes the diverse geopolitical and institutional barriers that affect scholars differently, including those tied to visas and funding. Proposals may take various forms, including organized panels featuring three to four panelists, workshops on specific teaching methods, and innovative formats not previously outlined. Each organized session should be accompanied by a 250-word panel proposal and a brief biographical statement for each presenter, highlighting their contributions. Individual papers will also be considered and organized into suitable panels, with an emphasis on fostering rigorous discussion and scholarly engagement. This event presents a vital platform for sharing insights and methodologies that reflect the complexities of historical narratives in today's interconnected world.
