About This Event

The 50th Annual Meeting & Conference of the French Colonial Historical Society (FCHS) is set to take place at Maynooth University in Ireland. This prestigious event will explore the theme Après la tempête: Afterlives of Colonial Crisis and Conflict, inviting scholars from diverse disciplines to submit proposals related to French colonial history and its legacies. The conference aims to delve into the impact of military conflicts, colonial massacres, environmental disasters, economic turmoil, and social upheaval on communities within the French colonial empire. Participants are encouraged to examine how these crises reshaped the lives of individuals and communities, along with the responses and resilience fostered in the aftermath of such events.Proposals for presentations should include a title, a 100-200 word summary, the author's name, institutional affiliation, email address, and a brief curriculum vitae, compiled into a single MS Word file. The FCHS provides opportunities for graduate students to apply for the Shorrock Travel Fellowship, which assists with travel expenses for those presenting papers, honoring the late Bill Shorrock's commitment to supporting graduate scholars. Additionally, the Peabody Award recognizes outstanding contributions to inclusivity and diversity in the field of French colonial history, with eligibility for recipients who present at the conference and hold full-time positions at institutions outside North America or Europe. The conference will take place at the historic South Campus of Maynooth University, with a gala reception planned. The nearby Glenroyal Hotel, located a short walk from the venue, serves as the conference hotel. Maynooth is conveniently situated approximately 30 kilometers southwest of Dublin Airport, with accessible transportation options including bus services and trains from Dublin city. Attendees will have the chance to explore historical sites in the area, including the original Fitzgerald family castle, Carton House, and notable museums in Dublin. The FCHS is dedicated to fostering a collegial and inclusive environment during the conference, ensuring that all participants feel respected and welcome. This event promises to be a significant gathering for those engaged in the study of French colonial history and its enduring impacts.
