The course titled On the Roof of the World: An Introduction to the Art and Architecture of Tibet and the Himalayas is a comprehensive exploration of the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Tibet and the Himalayan region. Set against the backdrop of the Tibetan Plateau, the course highlights how the extreme high-altitude environment has played a crucial role in preserving Buddhism and its artistic expressions, even as they faded in their country of origin, India. Participants will embark on an immersive journey that spans over a thousand years, delving into both religious and secular art forms that reflect a dynamic history of cross-cultural dialogue and artistic exchange.Taking place at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London, the course covers a wide array of artistic mediums and historical contexts, including religious paintings, statues, and intricately crafted jewelry inlaid with turquoise and coral. The study will also encompass textiles and dress, as well as significant architectural sites such as shrines, stupas, temples, and palaces. The course will provide brief introductions to various Tibetan scripts and religions, ensuring a well-rounded and immersive experience. Participants will have access to multi-media preparatory materials, including readings, videos, music, and online resources to enhance their learning. The final sessions will focus on contemporary Tibetan culture, particularly the institutions and sites established in exile, such as those in Dharamshala, which is home to His Holiness The Dalai Lama.
