About This Event

The event titled Lateral Stability of Building Structures is an online course aimed at professionals in the civil engineering and architecture fields, including assistant professors and civil engineers. The course is designed to equip attendees with an understanding of the methods necessary to achieve lateral stability in buildings and identify how robustness impacts this stability. Participants will learn to recognize second-order effects on building structure frames and illustrate the development and projection of load paths in frames, as well as identify and exploit both vertical and horizontal stability systems.Led by Chris O'Regan, a chartered structural engineer with over 35 years of experience, the course promises to impart valuable knowledge on lateral stability, drawn from O'Regan's extensive background in developing structures for a variety of building types. His expertise includes the design of shear walls and moment frames, supported by the publication of his Technical Guidance Notes in The Structural Engineer. Attendees can expect to gain insights into the practical guidance on structural robustness and disproportionate collapse, as well as an introduction to seismic design principles and design codes. This comprehensive course also covers essential topics such as Eurocode standards for timber and concrete structures, ensuring participants are well-equipped to apply these principles in their professional practices.
