About This Event
The event titled 'Making Sense of Microplastics' delves into the critical issue of microplastics, which have transitioned from being viewed merely as a marine pollution problem to a significant environmental and public health concern. Microplastics are now found in various elements of our daily lives, including drinking water, food, indoor air, and even human tissues. This presentation will provide attendees with a foundational understanding of what microplastics are, their movement through the environment, and their entry into the human body. It will also cover the current scientific insights regarding health risks associated with microplastics, including areas where uncertainties remain. Furthermore, the discussion will touch upon the developing analytical and regulatory landscape relevant to organizations and communities affected by this issue. The event features prominent speakers in the field. Adam Gushgari, PhD, PE, serves as the Senior Director of Emerging Contaminants at Eurofins Environment Testing America. Dr. Gushgari holds a doctorate in environmental engineering from Arizona State University’s Biodesign Institute, where he gained extensive expertise in wastewater-based epidemiology. His role involves being the external scientific voice for emerging contaminants including microplastics, PFAS, and endocrine-disrupting compounds. He has contributed significantly to the CDC’s National Wastewater Surveillance System during the COVID-19 pandemic and is recognized for his thought leadership at the intersection of analytical chemistry and environmental health.Another key speaker is Bijan Jafari, the Microplastics Practice Leader at Eurofins Environment Testing Northern California. Bijan has pioneered the use of Raman spectroscopy for commercial-scale microplastics analysis and leads a team dedicated to advancing research on microplastic contamination. His extensive experience in environmental testing and analytical method development has positioned his team to ensure high-quality, regulatory-compliant data for both scientific and industrial applications. Under his guidance, Eurofins has enhanced its capabilities to support various sectors, including private clients, government agencies, and academia, thereby strengthening the field of microplastics research and addressing industry needs.
