As of January 2017, the total installed capacity (including captive power) in Bangladesh was 15,351 megawatts (MW). As of 2015, 92% of the urban population and 67% of the rural population had access to electricity for lighting. On average, 77.9% of Bangladesh's population has access to electricity. It is projected that by 2030, Bangladesh will require 34,000 MW of electricity to sustain its economic growth of over 7%. The Bangladeshi power sector faces numerous challenges, including high system losses, delays in commissioning new power plants, inefficient power plants, unstable power supply, electricity theft, power outages, and a shortage of funds for power plant maintenance. Overall, power plants in the country have been unable to meet system demand over the past decade.
