Introduction
Exhibition Scale: Less than 10,000 - Africa's largest aviation and defense exhibition. The 2006 African Aerospace Technology and Weaponry Exhibition will be held at Waterkloof Air Force Base near Pretoria. This exhibition, which began in 1992, is organized jointly by the South African Air Force, the South African Business Federation, Armskor weapon company, and the "Association of Land, Sea and Air Technical Equipment Manufacturers." Held every two years, it is the largest aviation and defense exhibition on the African continent. The exhibition is divided into two themes: military and civil aircraft, and weaponry. 82 delegations from 37 countries visited the exhibition, including 19 defense ministers and 19 air force commanders. The previous exhibition attracted over 20,000 professional visitors and nearly 200,000 general visitors, with 12,000 people watching the flight performance. This exhibition is the largest advanced weaponry exhibition in African history, serving as a window to showcase advanced aerospace products and related defense technologies. The exhibition is strongly supported by the South African Department of Defense, the Department of Trade and Industry, and the South African Civil Aviation Authority. South Africa's defense industry is quite distinctive; as early as before the lifting of apartheid, the South African government invested heavily in defense industry R&D. After sanctions were lifted in the 1990s, South Africa actively collaborated with the United States and Europe to develop new generation combat systems. South Africa's weapon development has certain specialties in the following areas: tracked armored vehicles, radar, combat helicopters, mine countermeasures technology and equipment. Most of South Africa's domestic weapon manufacturing companies will also take this opportunity to showcase their many new products. According to Jane's Defence Weekly, apart from the host country, the exhibition stands of Russia, Brazil, India, and Malaysia were significantly larger than those of other countries. As Africa's largest arms importer and exporter, the South African military is gradually upgrading its land, sea, and air equipment, making the role of the South African Aerospace & Defence Exhibition even more prominent. Before and after the exhibition, South Africa will also hold joint military exercises involving multiple countries, and the participating air forces will conduct flight performances during the exhibition.
