活动介绍
The Dublin Seminar for New England Folklife is set to host its 2026 gathering titled 'Futurecasting, Futurekeeping: New Englanders Imagine Worlds to Come' at Historic Deerfield. This event marks the Seminar's 50th anniversary, celebrating its legacy of scholarship and publication regarding the everyday life, work, and culture of New England. The Seminar will explore how residents of the region have envisioned and shaped futures throughout its history, particularly during times of crisis and uncertainty. Attendees will engage in deep conversations about the ways New Englanders have attempted to forecast what the future might hold.A highlight of the Seminar will be a keynote address by Holly Jackson, a distinguished Professor of English and Chair of American Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She is known for her work 'American Radicals: How Nineteenth-Century Protest Shaped the Nation.' Programming will be in collaboration with the Communal Studies Association and a house museum in Chicopee, Massachusetts, dedicated to Edward Bellamy, a significant 19th-century author. The Seminar seeks proposals for papers that delve into various topics related to the imagined futures of New Englanders, including folk arts, literature, technological innovations, and community movements. This unique gathering will attract a diverse audience, including scholars, students, museum professionals, artisans, and preservationists, all contributing to a rich dialogue focused on New England's historical context and future possibilities.
