活动介绍

The School of Ice is an innovative program focused on ice core science that provides participants with a unique opportunity to delve into the Earth's past through the analysis of scientific records derived from ice cores collected by the NSF Ice Drilling Program. Hosted at Oregon State University in Corvallis, this program is designed for college faculty and high school teachers who instruct advanced science courses. The initiative aims to address the challenges of attracting young people to science by offering a rigorous professional development workshop that equips educators with cutting-edge scientific evidence from ice cores. Participants will receive comprehensive support, including airfare, lodging for four nights, meals, and class materials. The experiential nature of the School of Ice workshop builds participants' knowledge of contemporary research and empowers them to convey authentic scientific practices to their students. By the end of the course, educators are expected to create two written curriculum pieces integrating workshop information into their existing geoscience courses, along with a Plan of Action aimed at expanding science exploration opportunities for their undergraduate students. The program emphasizes the importance of evaluations; the School of Ice employs pre- and post-surveys for each workshop to measure impact, alongside interviews with past participants to assess long-term educational outcomes. Esteemed speakers and experts, including scientists, engineers, and educators from various institutions, contribute to the program, enhancing the learning experience. Notable presenters include Professor Erich Osterberg and Bess Koffman, among others, who share insights on past climate and proxy data analysis. Educators who have participated in previous workshops have expressed how the program transformed their teaching approach, providing them with hands-on exercises and practical methods to engage students in understanding climate change through the lens of ice core data. Overall, the School of Ice not only enriches educators' professional development but also fosters a collaborative environment for knowledge exchange, ensuring that participants can effectively pass on vital climate science to future generations.
